Tyson was born on December 19, 1933 in Harlem, New  York.  She is a highly regarded actress who is best known for her role in the film Sounder, as well appearances in the The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Roots.  Ms. Tyson has appeared in over 22 films, 60 television episodes/specials, and 13 theater productions.  Ms. Tyson has been nominated for an Academy Award (Sounder) and has won two Emmy Awards (The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman).
