Fresh Start Academy Middle High School
The beginning of a new school year, like the dawning of a new day, reminds us that the future holds infinite possibilities. I hope that your summer was relaxing, filled with adventures and good health because you deserve it. The opportunity to refuel over the summer is a necessary component of the important work that we do. I know that we are about to begin a great school year filled with hope, vision, and excitement.
As we begin this new year, I wish everyone the greatest success as we welcome our students to their educational journey of 2019-2020. This will be our BEST school year yet. This year will continue to be shaped by our reform efforts as outlined in our ON-TRAC PBSIS plan and our professional development plan. Our accomplishments have been monumental and we will continue our focus on teaching and learning so that our students graduate college and are career ready.
While maintaining the implementation of the initiatives already in place, this year we will also focus on addressing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and school safety initiatives. We also plan to enhance staff support and development in core content areas; augment individual and small group student support with additional tutors in the middle/high school and expand the use of Renaissance assessments for all middle school students and PLATO for high school students. We hope to provide a school program with a STEM focus for our students as well as expanding the high school curriculum.
Clearly, it is a year of great ambition and promise. Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can do a thing or you think you can’t, you’re right.” I know that we can meet all of our initiatives because we have a faculty and staff that believe in the promise of educational excellence. We know that we have work to do, work that requires commitment, focus and collaboration and we know that we will succeed.
I do not need to remind you of how important your job is for our children at Fresh Start Academy Middle/High School. Our students need your wisdom and your care. My hope is that through our reinvigorated Learning Community, both you and our students will think of our school as a place where community of learners come together to do interesting consequential work. I hope that you attempt new things this year and that you challenge your students with hard and interesting questions.
In closing, as we move forward with our efforts, I invite you to think about something written so long ago but something that still resonates today. Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I am confident that we will blaze a trail filled with success and accomplishment as, together; we launch the best year yet for Fresh Start Academy.

Fresh Start Academy is committed to the idea that all students can and will learn. We provide an environment designed to provide at-risk/disruptive and disaffected students the opportunity to meet their academic, social and emotional needs. The program design enables students to experience academic success, improve adverse behavior, decrease the failure and drop-out rate, and increase the quality of interaction between students and adults. The staff and administration will remain persistent in building self-esteem while fostering academic achievement.
The staff and administration in Fresh Start Academy understand that providing a school environment that is safe, nurturing with consistent, clear, well-defined rules, expectations, boundaries and consequences, our student behaviors can and will be modified to a more socially desirable way of behaving. Our behavior management program is a strength-based approach designed to empower students to make healthy choices and assume increasing responsibility for their behavior.
The Fresh Start Academy's school-wide behavior modification plan utilizes positive behavioral reinforcement techniques and concentrates on identifying student strengths as a means of building upon their positive attributes, qualities and characteristics which ultimately decrease inappropriate, disruptive, violent and aggressive behaviors.
